That school fees is increased is no news..so this is just a post to
pseudo-enlighten us for those of us that don't come for Congress when we
call for one
.. We forget that there is strength in numbers and we have
rights as individuals and students.. This post isn't meant to incite
any groups or to disrespect but to WAKE US UP onto the matter on ground.
I
don't know if most of you have heard of 'Ali must go' struggle where
all NIGERIAN STUDENTS went on a protest because THE MILK IN THEIR TEA
WAS REDUCED..yep!! You heard really right and laugh as hard as you
want..as ridiculous as it sounds, that protest happened across the
nation..and you cannot compare the standard of education that was
enjoyed now to then and now all we see is dilapidated structures, no
classrooms to learn ( kudos to the arena learners)
, unfriendly
environment, no reagents + equipments to use for practicals and yet every
now and then, ASUU goes on strike prolonging time to graduate and only
for when you graduate, you are called a half baked graduate by the
corporate organizations ( who would blame them though) and when you try
to exercise your basic human rights, you are victimized and intimidated by
elements. That is the fate of the average Nigerian student and the Lackadaisical attitude of students to academic work is another full blog
all together because a single or several blog posts can't do justice to
that matter.. Most students don't want to study again.
Oya back to
the school fees matter ( I apologize for the lengthy intro, I just
couldn't help it) so we heard school fees was increased by a certain
amount and after a protest and meetings and negotiations, the payment
was decentralized and then it hit us Gbam!!! Over 200% increment
in some quarters and some funny additions..very funny additions..
For
the medical student, we were to pay NGN100,000 - NGN145,000 as school fees
from against the 39,000 NGN we paid last year so you can imagine the
shock...
"This is a federal University for crying out loud" some students retorted frustratingly.
So
the process began to do something about it and a congress was called
between College of health sciences, Dentistry, Agriculture, Engineering
and Pharmacy and strategies were put in place with a communique agreed on
to address the issue of centralization and the exorbitant fees and
suspension of academic activities until school does something about the
fees ..there were speeches from different quarters pumping up the Aluta
spirit ( English was murdered by various quarters) ..pple wey I no sabi
be orators impressed me..frustration really brings out talents..and then
the SUG came and I can almost say that was where the problem came
because the President (no disrespect intended..it is
talkamasehappen.ng.alutacontinua) said a lot of things and ended up
saying nothing and when asked to sign a comminique, he bluntly refused.
A lot of people were of the impression that he had been bought over and I
can't argue with that school of thought because he was clearly not on
the side of the students..you no need jabranta to look into cowries see
that vision and I must really commend the students because even if
nerves were frayed and we were pushed to start a fight, we kept our
cool..
So we agreed to have congresses in our respective
departments and have a roundtable with our departmental heads for
negotiation.
... To be continued.
